However it is strange for it to leak, there might be a leak around the base of the thermostat housing instead. Difficult to tell with it all stuffed back in there. Anyway, I don't remember if you can loosen the bolts of the thermostat housing enough to pull it out but either way the tube going back is bolted down to the block and connects to the heater return pipe. So basically yeah, this is a project that would need to be done with a timing belt job or an engine pull really. As for the pipe, you probably don't need to replace it, just reseal the joint if indeed that is where the leak is. I would definitely be sure about the location before I started tearing into all that.
